Lovecraft in India

Yksityiskohdat

The overall premise of the “Lovecraft in India” series is that sometime in the 1930s, HP Lovecraft is recruited by a wing of British intelligence which invites him to Calcutta to infiltrate a spiritual circle. This circle is suspected to be a front for Indian freedom fighters plotting an occult uprising. The 1930s were a time of incredible ferment. The freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi was challenging a century of imperial rule. The rise of Communism and Fascism in Europe had reverberations in India as well. Ideas of what the future was to look like were crashing into each other like tectonic plates. A state of tumult prevailed, with a heightened sense of being on the cusp of great events. The first volume is a broad adaptation as well as continuation of Lovecraft’s short story “Dagon” (first published in 1919). In this adaptation, the framing story has been altered. The principal narrator is a Bengali revolutionary; his actions are based on the activities of real-life organizations espousing the cause of “revolutionary terror”. The narrator is condemned to be transported to the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. The islands were used by the British as a vast penal colony after nearly exterminating the native population. The actions described in the original story are set in an uncharted region of the Andaman Sea. The island and the crossing were collectively known as Kalapani or Black Water and became synonymous with torture, madness and death. Through this, a connection is also made with the sub-genre of lost continents such as Mu and Lemuria, and can therefore be described as an adventure in forbidden knowledge.
